Fishing Reel Object Study

Professor Mark Stanley | Summer 2016

This project was actually my first assignment as a graduate student at UTK and I have to say, it has aged pretty well. All of these various representational approaches attempt to allow us to see the object in higher definition, as something greater than what it is physically.

First, the object was meticulously dismantled and measured. Next, the object was replicated and manipulated through the use of hand and computer-aided drafting techniques. Various types of collage, photography, and high-definition scanning were also employed to alter and further defamiliarize the object.

Each representation highlights the concept of movement in a slightly different way, even when there physically is none. This was an extremely effective way to learn how to craft high-quality representations.
