The following images were sketched and photographed for Tricia Stuth’s Materials and Methods class. The goal of the project was to create structural and material sketches in as great detail as possible through the use of both observation and educated guesses.
The precedent we were given was the Langston-Hughes Library, designed by Maya Lin. The library houses the works of various African American writers and is located on the Haley Farm in Clinton, Tennessee. The farm is the headquarters for the Children’s Defense Fund, founded by Alex Haley. In Lin’s design, she called for the original barn to be dismantled and rebuilt as a façade to surround a new, Shaker-style structure. Sketching this building required a lot of investigation and research into this unusual method of construction.
